Ancient Ocean is the brainchild of acid-folk turned ambient/drone artist John Bohannon from Brooklyn, NY. Building from silent humming tones, guitar melodies and delicate tonal drones envelope into lush soundscapes. Moods are similar to Stars of the Lid and various solo works of Kawabata Makoto, but carry their own majestic quality. John Bohannon is also the curator of Electric Temple Records. His debut recording “I” is out now on Expo 70’s Sonic Meditations label. He will be joined by special guest Daniel Carter.
American Sphinx is one of many projects by New Thing Productions founder Michael Hentz. This Syracuse/Ithaca duo features Jarek Miller on drums along with Michael on guitar, loops and flute. Their music combines elements of free jazz, psychedelic noise, and raga drones. They will be joined by special guest Tom Carter on guitar. Tom Carter is a guitar player best known for his work with acclaimed psych-drone iconoclasts Charalambides. Since 2000, however, he has become increasingly active as not only a solo artist but as a collaborator. He has performed with improvising musicians as diverse as Thurston Moore, Jandek, Tetuzi Akiyama, Matt Valentine, and many others, as well as being a key member in groups like Badgerlore (with Ben Chasny of Six Organs of Admittance), Friday Group, Mudsuckers (with Robert Horton and the Yellow Swans), and Zaika (with Marcia Bassett of Double Leopards and Hototogisu).
Guitarist Loren Connors was born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1949. Best known as a composer and improviser, Connors has issued over 50 guitar records on his own imprints (Daggett, St. Joan, Black Label) since the late 1970s and over two dozen on other labels across the globe. He has recorded under the names Guitar Roberts, Loren Mattei, Loren MazzaCane Connors and other variations. Connors' singular adpation of the blues is a distinct personal vision combining the Delta bottleneck sound and the ancestral blues voice (appearing as distortion, baying hounds or multi-tracked guitar), with hauntingly unexpected sounds. Outside of Connors' three decades of solo work, he has collaborated with Suzanne Langille, Jim O'Rourke, Darin Gray, Alan Licht, Christina Carter, Keiji Haino, San Agustin, Jandek and many others, as well as leading the group Haunted House. Loren will be joined with Margarida Garcia on stage.

Offset Your Reality...

I have long since given up on any ambitions to become a WFMU DJ. Time and logic continue to be enemies in that regard. However, I can console myself through this resource by letting others know about music that excites me with every blog post and mix that I create. For that, I want to take this moment to thank the people at WFMU who have worked so hard to make this archive a reality and for allowing the rest of us out there a space to talk about and champion the sounds that make life on earth bearable.
This mix is dedicated to all those who have a need to offset their reality. Thank you for listening.

Ears Wide Open: moolen

Leave it to the awesome LCL netlabel to turn me on to some more great new music. LCL recently started a series of releases entitled Carte Blanche that are releases that are not the fare that the label normally puts out. Moolen (Moritz Beller) is a young artist from Hamburg, Germany who started composing some pretty great post-rock/electronica after the breakup of his ska band.
Moolen cites The Notwist and other post-rock bands as a big influence. I tend to see a bit of early Caribou and Ulrich Schnauss as well. Art of Heartwork is moolen's first release and is a document on what has been going on in his life over the past few years. Very personal and interesting this release is worth a careful listen. Brokentopflow is my favorite track of the moment. Give it a listen and enjoy!

Everybody pay close attention to Ja Prawn...

Remember that Simpsons Christmas episode where Bart burns down the Christmas tree and then lied about it, bringing lots of wanted media attention on himself and his family? If you've seen it, you might recall Gary Coleman voicing himself, except he was a security guard for a television station. At one point, he's on the phone with a Chinese restaurant complaining about his order:
"I ordered a galaxy of prawns. Three prawns is hardly a galaxy." I'm going somewhere with this, I promise. Just stay with me...
Someone far wiser than myself once suggested to always pay attention to that which comes in threes. Earlier this month, an unexpected package arrived at my home. It turned out to be a vinyl copy of Everybody, the debut album from Ja Prawn. One week later, songs from the album showed up over at Promonet. Not too long after that, I'm track digging through the latest uploads here at the Free Music Archive and there they are again. While three prawns may be short of a galaxy, the significance of Ja Prawn showing up in my life three times is not lost on me. It was a no-brainer in terms of which artist I was supposed to feature today.
It just so happens that Ja Prawn is a trio consisting of musicians John Kirby, Bram Inscore, and Pete Mcneal. They've played with a number of notable artists, including Beck, Money Mark, and DJ Z-Trip. The attached track is the album's opening cut, "Soulja Boi," which should give you a good idea of what to expect from the album. It's got a hip-hop lean, but it's subtle and clearly takes a backseat to the synths and the bass. It's sleek, but lo-fi at the same time. It tries to exude a certain sexiness, but there's this endearing video game geekiness that gets in the way. It's a fun cut and one that deserves a home here at the Archive.
Now if you'll excuse me, I've got a drop card to redeem...
