Minimal Sounds Aplenty (review)

Ezekiel Honig - photo by basic_sounds

It's a great feeling when I have been away for awhile and then check to see what new artists have made the decision to post tracks on FMA.  I was happily surprised to see that one of my fave minimal techo artists has decided to put his hat in the ring here at FMA.  Ezekiel Honig has been putting out wonderful minimal techno/ambient sounds since 2003 on various labels including Anticipate, Microcosm and Unfoundsound which put out the track linked below.

I like the fact that a lot of Mr. Honig's music is both dance floor and headphone friendly.  There is a lot going on with it besides a pounding beat.  Take a listen to "the breeze of hibernation" which comes from his It's Getting Cold Outside E.P.

i've known Ezekiel for a good long while now - over a decade easy. i first met him through a mutual dj friend in our suny albany days, back when he was just getting his start spinning drum and bass records, ranging anywhere from jazzy steppers to darker material. somewhere along the way, his choices got more atmospheric. back in 2000, i remember leaving a club night that some friends hosted at a bar and he handed me a cd with one track on it entitled "hibernate." it was glitchy, minimal house with these warm chords and i was completely blown away by it. i didn't know it then, but i was witnessing the beginning stages of his transformation into the minimal techno artist that we know and love. i am in awe of what he's been able to accomplish in the past ten years and proud to call him one of my friends.

"hibernate" was never actually released, but "the breeze of hibernation" represents an alternate take of that cut. in revisiting this ep, i have to confess that i totally slept on "diskette storage" and i need to tell Zeke that next time i see him...
