"Phoning It In? What's that?"

Yeah, so I've been phoning it in myself recently, but soon enough I'll be all caught up with uploading Phonings It In to the FMA and will be able to do it in REAL TIME (instead of fake time).

In the mean time, here're a bunch more old Phoning It In episodes new to the FMA:

-Sterling (as sterling as something can sound over the phone, anyway) indiepop from Brown Recluse.
-Two jammin' sets from MV + EE.

So after sitting on this for months, the folder of signed CC agreements bulging to capacity, I've finally gotten around to uploading more over-the-telephone performances, with even more to follow in the coming weeks. For now, briefly:

-Chanteuse, improviser, and 'FMU fave Marianne Nowottny.
-Alina Simone's slow burning sesh.
-Storyteller extraordinaire Jacob Smigel.
-Portland's very writerly Minor Thirds.
-Canadian dance sensations HANK.
-And jawdropping one-man-band Jawbone.

No, that's a lie. I have no idea what you're thinking, but I'll make a suggestion.

"How can I hear the latest and greatest Phoning It In radio shows?"

Well, you have two easy options:

The first is to tune in to KDVS Davis 90.3fm or KDVS.org every Monday from 7:30-8pm PST, following the superb Interrobang show.

Not every show recorded is broadcast immediately, though. And some not at all. To keep up with every single show, go to phoningitin.net and subscribe to the podcast, or just click here.

Easy as pie. And of course stay tuned for plenty of older shows being uploaded to the FMA.

Daniel Johnston!

One of the "Oh shit..." questions I get asked a lot about Phoning It In (not that I actually get asked a lot about Phoning It In, that is) is "...how did you get Daniel Johnston on the show?" He has an aura of inaccessibility about him, but setting things up with his brother Dick- Daniel doesn't use email; his family handles most of his affairs- proved surprisingly quick once I got in touch. Really, all it takes in most cases is to ask nicely. I hadn't yet heard of Daniel's legendary over-the-phone sets for WFMU, so I didn't know that the concept wasn't such an unusual request. Dick had rigged up some kind of speaker-phone setup, but when I called for the show, no one else was around so Daniel just picked up the handset and played into that. As you can hear, the results didn't suffer. A few years later I saw him play a packed club in Boston, and though he was clearly having a ball, this is the way I prefer to listen to his songs: distantly, but as though being whispered only for me.

Well, hello there!

OMG, my first blog post! Almost ever, I think.

Nadav here, host of the Phoning It In radio program, and as you might guess from the concept of the show, I'm not one for keeping up with the latest technology (although, sad truth be told, I don't myself have a landline telephone).

I'll keep this one brief, then, with the promise of more to come, much more. Here you'll find just a half-dozen or so of the almost 100 Phoning it In episodes whose featured artists have graciously allowed them to be included in the FMA (which themselves are part of almost 400 Phoning It In episodes that have been recorded over the last four years). I plan on being fully up-to-speed within the next few weeks.

So on behalf of myself and dj's talksonthephone past, I'd just like say how much of an honor and a thrill it is to have our tracks up on the FMA!
